Hi! I’m Tia Ajao. I am a DC-born, Baltimore-raised child of immigrant parents from Nigeria, West Africa. I obtained my Masters of Public Health degree in Maternal & Child Health, Prevention & Community Health in 2008 and later chose to pursue a career as a nurse & a doula at The Johns Hopkins School of Nursing in 2014, due to my own experience as a mother of 2 & as a birth advocate in my community.
In lieu of 7 years of hospital-based birth experience, I have found so much joy in serving in community birth! I served with Special Beginnings Birth & Women’s Center as a Birth Assistant from April 2019 until they closed in May 2020. I was also trained to be a home birth midwife assistant in July 2019 by the late & beloved Mama Claudia Booker CPM of Birthing Hands Midwifery & Birth Services. In addition, I have supported Cassandra Woods CNM of My Way Birth in home birth since Fall 2020. As a birth assistant with Birth Care & Women’s Health, I am honored to support families for homebirth in Greater Baltimore & surrounding areas, as well as at the birth center.
I love serving mothers & babies in several capacities including as an IBCLC lactation consultant, a Lamaze certified birth educator, a Birth & Postpartum doula and as an Evidence-based Birth Instructor!!! I am currently a student of Nurse-Midwifery & Women’s Health at Georgetown University School of Nursing, and I can’t wait to help make an impact as a provider in our local area! I co-direct a non-profit called Hello Baby Baltimore where we focus on education for “the whole village”, and doula advocacy. My org acknowledges each newborn I support as “Baby Philanthropists”! I am a Fellow with The National Black Midwives Alliance and Chair of The Black Mother-Baby DEI Team for DONA International.
